A little bit of stress does help you to stay focused at work and keep you on your toes. However, situation could get worse when you have too many things on your plate.In fact, some jobs can affect an individual’s mental health so much that unemployed people seem to fare better.  In a nutshell, you will have either the same or worse mental health than unemployed individuals. This is terrifying.

A stressful work environment can contribute to problems such as headache, insomnia, high blood pressure and it can also lead to depression, obesity and heart disease. Compounding the problem, people who experience excessive stress often deal with it in unhealthy ways such as overeating, eating junk foods, smoking cigarettes or abusing drugs and alcohol.

What steps can you take to manage stress?

  • Monitoring– Record your thoughts and feelings about the environment, including the people and circumstances involved, the physical setting and how you reacted. Taking notes can help you find patterns among your stressors and your reactions to them.
  • Healthy Choices– Instead of attempting to fight stress with fast food or alcohol, you can make healthy choices by doing yoga, exercising (a great stress-buster), make time for your hobbies and favourite activities such as reading novel, shopping, spending time with your loved ones or even petting your pets.
  • Boundaries– Establish some work-life boundaries for yourself. When you get home, focus on your personal life and stop worrying about unread emails in your inbox.
  • Revitalise– To avoid the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout, we need time to replenish and return to our pre-stress level of functioning. This recovery process requires you to disconnect from work. Don’t let your vacation days go to waste. When possible, take time off to relax and unwind, so you come back to work feeling reinvigorated and ready to perform at your best.
  • Relax –Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises can help melt away stress. Start by taking a few minutes each day to focus on a simple activity like breathing, walking or enjoying a meal. Try them out and it might help you to de-stress
  • Support –Accepting help from trusted friends and family members can improve your ability to manage stress. If that doesn’t work, seek for professional help by talking to a shrink. Seeing a shrink is not a sign of weakness but it is a sign of strength. Don’t be shameful if you want to make your life better.

In essence, stress is manageable if you know the right way to cope with it. At times, stress can be unbearable to handle. Hence, it is a sign for you to take a breather from work and focus on something that makes you buoyant. Get help if you find it too taxing before it destroys you. You only live once.
